Inheritance of Abraham

Image
In Jesus, the original limited promise of territory to Abraham is transformed to encompass the entire creation .  The land of Canaan was a preliminary stage in the greater redemptive plan of Yahweh, one that  ALWAYS  envisioned something beyond the nation of Israel. In the New Testament, the covenant promises find fulfillment in the “ true seed of Abraham ,” Jesus Christ, including the New Creation - the “ new heavens and the new earth ” - [ Photo by  Gaël Gaborel  on Unsplash ].

All are Heirs in Jesus

Returning to the custodianship of the Law means rebuilding the wall between Jew and Gentile, but “you are all one in Christ - heirs of Abraham.”  In  Galatians , Paul portrays the Mosaic Law as the “ custodian ” or “ pedagogue ” that supervised Israel “ until  the seed came ,” and that “ seed ” was Jesus. In Greco-Roman society, the “ pedagogue ” was the slave with custodial and disciplinary authority over an underage child until he reached maturity, even though the custodian was a slave - [ Farmland - Photo by Federico Respini on Unsplash ].

Heir of the World

According to Romans, the land promised to Abraham envisioned the inclusion of the entire world  –  Romans 4:13 . God began to redeem humanity with His covenant with Abraham, beginning with the summons for him to leave his homeland for the “ land that I will show you .” Yahweh would make him into a “ great nation ,” and in the Patriarch, He would “ bless all the clans of the earth .” And from the start, the land promise was central to the covenant - [  Earth Photo by  NASA  on Unsplash ].

Blessing to the Nations

Image
The covenant promises to “bless all nations” in Abraham finds its fulfillment in Jesus and his gospel – He is the true “seed of Abraham.”  Basic to the redemption of humanity is the covenant with Abraham and his “ seed .” This includes the promise that “ all the nations the earth  will be blessed in him ,” and that he will have innumerable descendants. So, how will the nations be blessed “ in Abraham ,” and when will this “ blessing ” occur? Who are his descendants, and most importantly, who is the true “ seed of Abraham ”? - [ Globe photo by Fernando @cferdo on Unspla ].

Son of Abraham

Image
Jesus is the true “son of Abraham,” the heir of the covenant promises, and the one who implements the inheritance .  The introduction to  Matthew  declares Jesus to be the “ son of David, the  son of Abraham .” These are more than names on a genealogical list. They prepare the reader for the theme of fulfillment that dominates this gospel. He is the Davidic Messiah and the promised heir of the Patriarch, and in him, the covenant promises are fulfilled - [ Arrival - Photo by  Gran Canaria For Nomad List  on Unsplash ].

True Seed of Abraham

Image
Jesus is the true “seed” of Abraham, the heir of the covenant promises, and receipt of the inheritance is based on faith in Him .  The introduction to the gospel of  Matthew  declares that Jesus is the “ son of David, the son of Abraham .” This is more than a simple genealogical notation - it sets the stage for the theme of fulfillment threaded throughout  Matthew . Jesus is the Davidic Messiah and King of Israel, and the true Son and promised “ seed ” of the Patriarch. In him, the covenant promises come to fruition - [ Promised Land - Photo by Hans Luiggi on Unsplash ].

Jesus, the Key

Image
Jesus is the key that unlocks the Hebrew Scriptures to reveal the nature and purposes of God.  Not only does Jesus play the central role in unveiling the purposes of God, but he is also the very center of all the Father’s plans, especially the redemption of humanity. Only in Christ is the glory of the Creator of all things revealed, and only His Son is qualified to reveal His true nature. In him, all the promises of God find their fulfillment - [ Key photo by  Silas Köhler  on Unsplash ].
